Landscape with Invisible Hand

When the vuvv first landed, it came as a surprise to Adam and the rest of planet Earth - but not necessarily an unwelcome one. After all, can it really be called an invasion when the vuvv generously offered free advanced technology and cures for every illness imaginable?
Turns out, an invasion doesn't have to look or act like an invasion to actually be one. With his parents' jobs replaced by alien tech and no money to pay for food, clean water, or the miraculous vuvv medicine, Adam and his girlfriend, Chloe, have to get creative to survive in this brave new world. Since the vuvv love anything that they deem "classic" Earth culture - oldies music, still-life paintings of fruit, fin cars - recording 1950s-style dates for the vuvv to watch in a pay-per-minute format seems like a brilliant idea. But as the money rolls in and Adam and Chloe start to hate each other more with each passing episode, Adam must decide how far he is willing to go to give the vuvv what they want.
M. T. Anderson, winner of the National Book Award and author of Feed, returns to future Earth in this sharply wrought satire of art and truth in the midst of colonization.
