In the historic city of Hangzhou, Li Wei has built a respected silk business and a comfortable life for his family. Yet for all his success, his greatest concern is his only surviving child, Xiu-ying. Having already endured the loss of two children, Li Wei becomes fiercely protective of his daughter, determined to shield her from the hardships of the world.

Xiu-ying grows up surrounded by affection, beauty, and security. She spends her days in the family garden, visits West Lake with her friend Meiling, and knows little of the responsibilities carried by her father. Zhang Lan, her mother, quietly worries that such protection may leave Xiu-ying unprepared for the future.

Then a journey near West Lake changes everything.

A sudden accident leaves Li Wei critically injured. As his family waits through surgery and days of uncertainty, Xiu-ying is forced to confront a possibility she has never imagined: a life without the father who has always stood between her and the world.

After his death, grief consumes the household. But while trying to understand the father she has lost, Xiu-ying discovers something he left behind, a hidden letter and diary containing thoughts, fears, regrets, and hopes he never expressed openly.

What she finds changes the way she remembers him.

Li Wei's greatest act of love may not have been protecting his daughter from the world, but preparing her, however imperfectly, to face it without him.

As Xiu-ying begins to step beyond the sheltered life her father created, she must learn the family business, confront difficult decisions, and discover what it means to inherit not only a silk house, but also the responsibility behind her father's life's work.

Against the quiet beauty of West Lake, Lantern on the West Lake is a story of family, grief, inheritance, and the difficult first steps toward independence.
