Summary
Return with us to those thrilling days of yesteryear as Mike Vendetti narrates this early Zane Grey novel of hardy pioneers taming the wild west. Yes, despite the difficult times, romance flourishes and the bad guys are eliminated almost single handedly as our heroes Jonathan Zane and his sidekick Lew “Deathwind” Wetzel fight their way through mud, blood, gore, savage Indians, and despicable outlaws, to make the land safe for pioneer families as they settle the wild west.

Fun albeit predictable story. The narrator is easy to listen to initially, then got a bit out of whack in last quarter - rough splices, read too fast or not in proper rhythm as dialogue. However, I liked his tone.

The story is entertaining but at the beginning of each chapter they identify the book, who it's from (Audiobooks) who narrates it and all their websites!! Way too much for the beginning of each chapter. The end result is I prefer other websites over Audiobooks because of all the info at the beginning of each chapter!!

The storyline is pretty much what I expect from Zane Grey. The novel, contrary to what some others have said, struck me as a bit overplayed and melodramatic. His voice, though lovely for manly characters, was not suitable for the female voices. It veered towards the comical. And in the second half of the book it almost seemed as if the narrator grew increasingly melodramatic, some moments near kabuki theater. I couldn't handle it. I listened to the whole thing, but it drove me a little crazy.

The narrator’s voice was perfect for this novel, the plot engaging and it gave a vivid picture of what the frontier was like. Having never read one of Zane Greys books, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I have enjoyed all of Zane Grey’s books I have listened to. While it is a little bit predictable the author is able to make you root for one character and despise another with equal ease. Now about the narrator. Mike Vendetti should be a decent narrator, his tone is easy listening! One minor issue I had was that his character voices occasionally carry on past the dialogue, into the description of who was speaking or how they were speaking. The larger issue was that it sounded like he became bored with narrating at one point. I almost had to quit listening when he started narrating in a sing-song voice, or adding odd inflections and drawing out the length of words. Also a man with a deep voice should just try to soften his voice for female dialogue, as he did most of the story, because his falsetto is not convincing ;). Overall, there was a dark couple hours of narration, but I enjoyed it.
