Summary
In the 70s and 80s, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to the United States-all in search of a new place to call home. Decades later, their experiences remain largely unknown. Kao Kalia Yang was driven to tell her own family’s story after her grandmother's death. The Latehomecomer is a tribute to that grandmother, a remarkable woman whose spirit held her family together through their imprisonment in Laos, their narrow escape into Thailand’s Ban Vinai Refugee Camp, their immigration to St. Paul when Yang was only six years old, and their transition to life in America. It is also an eloquent, firsthand account of a people who have worked hard to make their voices heard in their adopted homeland.

Very interesting dis script ions of the plights of refugees seeking Freedom . Never realized all the difficulties involved in seeking asylum in a new country and Culture. And all the difficulties maintaining familial ingrained culture .Her descriptions of her Grandmother and her devotion to her was re markablle , although a little drawn out . Narrator was some times difficult to understand !

This story is important. The personal view and respect the author has for her culture and her ancestors enlightening to all. I’m just sorry that the narrator sounds so whiny throughout the entire book. I kept listening, but it wasn’t easy.

The never told story of lives forever changed by wars they had nothing to do with. the narrator's voice made my eardrums bleed.! Were the story not so captivating I'd have given up on chapter 2.

Lovely story. I was wrapped up in it from start to finish. It's incredible what this family got through together.
