King Arthur is a legendary British leader said to have defended Britain from Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. His story is largely based on folklore and literary invention, and historians debate whether he truly existed. Limited references to Arthur appear in sources like the Annales Cambriae, Historia Brittonum, and writings of Gildas, as well as early poetry such as Y Gododdin.

Arthur’s legend gained widespread popularity through Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 12th-century Historia Regum Britanniae, though earlier Welsh and Breton tales already portrayed him as either a heroic warrior or a magical figure linked to the Otherworld, Annwn. It remains unclear how much Geoffrey borrowed versus invented, but his version became the foundation for later stories.

Geoffrey depicts Arthur as a powerful king who defeats the Saxons and establishes an empire across Britain and beyond. Many iconic elements originate here, including Uther Pendragon, Merlin, Excalibur, Tintagel, the battle of Camlann, and Avalon.

In the 12th century, French writer Chrétien de Troyes expanded the legend, introducing Lancelot and the Holy Grail and shifting focus to the Knights of the Round Table. Arthurian tales flourished throughout the Middle Ages, declined afterward, and revived in the 19th century.

Today, the legend endures in literature and modern media such as film, television, and comics. Sir James Knowles’ version remains one of the most well-known retellings of Arthur and his knights.
