Unabridged Audiobook
Interesting story which is important today as we see echoes of the same attacks on transgender people. The story was a little implausible at times but was a great way to learn history most people do not know.
A timely historical novel reminding us that a country’s strength and character are revealed by how it treats its’ most vulnerable people. Excellent character development with a historical plot set in the after days of WW II Nazi Germany with flashbacks to a time before Hitler, Hitler’s reign and American occupation. The main characters are a transsexual, his spouse, and an escapee from a Nazi Detention camp. The story tells of American liberation and the struggle by the characters to exist and be true to oneself. The characters immigrate from Germany to the United States with the discovery that hate and love exists everywhere. As a student of history, I was spellbound and could not stop listening.
This topic is not usually a focus in historical fiction. It was interesting and the characters were well developed. The transgender community in Berlin and the clinic being ravaged by Nazis was haunting. The lifestyle Sofie and Bertie lived to survive on the farm and their encounter with Americans after the war showed their hope and resilience. After surviving that, their journey to America and seeing the Statue of Liberty were continued challenges.
Great . The production was very good, at ration was wonderful.
Great
Heartbreaking and hopeful.
Wow. What an amazing, educational and important book. The relevancy it has today is startling and makes the book even more powerful. Literally everyone should read this.
A compelling story about humanity; compassion, resilience and the ability to find love and hope despite the odds, We are all human regardless of our sexual orientation, which I for the most part is a private matter, and this story is a powerful reminder of this, Who you love doesn’t hurt a society, but hate and prejudice does. Highly recommend.
This book was amazing. I really learned a lot about the treatment of trans and gay people during and even after World War II. The story was very compelling.
This audio book was read beautifully.
