Lit: A Memoir

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Mary Karr

Narrated By: Mary Karr

Publisher: HarperAudio

Date: January 2010

Duration: 12 hours 30 minutes

Lit follows Mary Karr's descent into the inferno of alcoholism and madness—and her astonishing resurrection.
Karr's longing for a solid family seems secure when her marriage to a handsome, Shakespeare-quoting poet produces a son they adore. But she can't outrun her apocalyptic past. She drinks herself into the same numbness that nearly devoured her charismatic but troubled mother, reaching the brink of suicide. A hair-raising stint in 'The Mental Marriott' awakens her to the possibility of joy, and leads her to an unlikely faith. Lit is about getting drunk and getting sober; becoming a mother by letting go of a mother; learning to write by learning to live. It is a truly electrifying story of how to grow up—as only Mary Karr can tell it.

This is one of the most difficult audio books yet, I've listened. The narrator speaks entirety too fast, not able to comprehend what's being said and, the sound robotic. I allowed the book to play, but I am extremely disappointed in the quality!

Love Mary Karr. A wonderful blend of funny and heart wrenching.

I rarely return a book without listening to it. Did not make it through the first disk.

I had heard good things about this book. The content interested me. The author who is also the narrator, drove me crazy ! Very monotone voice, no inflection or emotion. I really couldn't finish it due to the author's poor telling of her own story. Maybe reading it would have been better then listening to it.
