Cornelia “Neeltje” Feyen is not only spectacularly behind on her next novel, but her affair with a married woman has gone both public and sour. Fearing further retaliation from her lover’s husband, and knowing that society usually isn’t on the side of faelings, those who are half human, half faerie (and sapphic ones, at that!), she sees no other option but to temporarily move in with her brother, Alfred, on the small Dutch island of Gravesmade, where he hopes she can use her faeling ability to spot faerie curses and win the community’s trust.

Despite her broken heart, on the voyage Cornelia finds herself saving a beautiful damsel in distress from water faeries, but loses track of her with no idea of her identity. Cornelia vows to not seduce her as all of her relationships turn out badly, but as she saves Josefien from another faerie attack her broken heart fades and something more delightful takes its place.
