Summary
In this gripping portrait of war and its aftermath from bestselling author Lynn Austin, a young woman searches for the truth her childhood friend won’t discuss after returning from World War II, revealing a story of courage, friendship, and faith.

Peggy Serrano couldn’t wait for her best friend to come home from the war. But the Jimmy Barnett who returns is much different from the Jimmy who left, changed so drastically by his experience as a medic in Europe that he can barely function. When he attempts the unthinkable, his parents check him into the VA hospital. Peggy determines to help the Barnetts unravel what might have happened to send their son over the edge. She starts by contacting Jimmy’s war buddies, trying to identify the mysterious woman in the photo they find in Jimmy’s belongings.

Seven years earlier, sensing the rising tide against her people, Gisela Wolff and her family flee Germany aboard the passenger ship St. Louis, bound for Havana, Cuba. Gisela meets Sam Shapiro on board and the two fall quickly in love. But the ship is denied safe harbor and sent back to Europe. Thus begins Gisela’s perilous journey of exile and survival, made possible only by the kindness and courage of a series of strangers she meets along the way, including one man who will change the course of her life.

Too boring for me

Educational as well as inspirational and heartwarming.

Loved the faith aspects woven throughout the story and the well-represented devotion of both the Christian and Jewish religions. I’ve never read a story from the perspective of those who experienced the rejection of The St Louise .Unfortunately, I felt the writing was shallow and the narration not compelling. Her German accent was poor, at best, and she was overall ‘choppy’ in her performance. It just didn’t flow and became distracting. I’m not sorry I listened to it though.

Excellent story spanning World War 2 and the aftermath from the eyes of Christian and Jewish alike. Beautifully written, it wasn’t rushed or dragged out but perfectly followed multiple characters in their struggle to understand Gods purpose through the devastating events. I wish there had been more resolution with Peggy’s father and step mother but otherwise felt it was perfect. The narrator did a beautiful job!

Initially the narrator's voice was annoying to me; too polished and feminine. However, she is an excellent reader and did the book justice. The book started off slow, but built, captivating my attention until I was waiting for the next chapter.

I gained appreciation for the struggles of many during the time period. I loved the fortitude of the characters. Great book.

This was an interesting story of the price that war extracts from those called to serve. It seemed, perhaps, a little over the top in places, but was well worth the listen. The narrator did an excellent job and made me love the main character's personality. She made it easy to follow the plot with the several character she portrayed.

Such a good book. It starts out slow and draws you into each character’s story and how they are intertwined. I “felt” the horrors experienced by Geisla and Jim; the hopelessness that arose from their experiences. The reader could have made it more interesting if her voice wasn’t so monotonous in the beginning. It became better toward the end of the story.

This book had me on the first chapter. I loved every bit of it. I didn’t want to put it down and finished it in 2 days I think. The author made the characters come alive and held my interest.
