Summary
A mage's fate is worse than death...

Lucian dreams of a new life outside the cesspool of Earth. Unfortunately, his wish comes true when the government identifies him as a mage.

No one knows why the mages are being born. No one knows why their powers lead to madness and death in a terrifying disease known as 'the fraying'. The only solution is to quarantine the mages in academies.

When Lucian is exiled from Earth, he must travel to the distant world of Volsung to receive training. During the long passage, he meets a mysterious mage. She prophesies he is marked by the Manifold, the reality that is the source of all magic. It is a destiny that requires him to master abilities he never imagined he possessed.

But that's the last thing he wants. He faces a terrible choice. To accept his new reality as a mage. Or, to try and outrun destiny...

In my opinion I thought this book was fantastic, and can easily see it becoming a film series. It does have a few dry spots but that does not take away from how good the story is. The narrator did an amazing job as well with capturing all the characters.

A very good introductory to a great saga. In my opinion, the only downside is there is too much descriptive and repetitive detail, otherwise a very good beginning.

The idea is good, the writing didn't sell it very well, though, lacking mostly in dialogues. It's still an interesting read and I enjoyed it. The fact it was recorded by multiple narrators helps a bit but unfortunately they sound rather artificial. Not something I'll be going back to.

Frankly, I did not finish the book. The characters had a very immature feel. The events were predictable. I thought the main character's thoughts and actions towards his mom were bratty and not personally addressed. The budding romance was emotionally stale. I was not invested at all. and honestly I'm a little tired of reading books from authors who clearly have some grudge against Christians and go on and on about it in their books. I read fantasy/sci-fi to escape reality, not listen to authors air their ideas about religious people all being bug-eyed, hateful Shaker Karens.

A good new approach to magic. Interesting main character. A dystopian galaxy, where everyone only aides themselves. There were a few inconsistencies, like no assistance to get mages off-world, gangs roving airports, mages use wooden sail boats for four day journey despite hurricanes. Nonetheless, I expect to read the remaining 7 sequels. Narrator had clear voices for the different characters.
