Unabridged Audiobook
The book follows a young girl named Mara as the specter of divorce looms over her home. Daughter of a developmentally disabled piano savant mother and an emotionally neglectful sneak of a father, Mara's ravenous pursuit of knowledge and curiosity in spirit go almost unhampered by her parents' dysfunction. The story is told by her mother, Eliza, as the narrator. This narrative structure poses a challenge to the reader, as Eliza often comes to conclusions much later than they first appear on the page (her decision to continually enlist and heed the illegal advice of an unaccredited therapist is the chief example). Hope reigns for Mara, though, once her parents' separation is complete and Eliza's revived piano career bring the mother-daughter duo to New York.
