Summary
This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.
Matthew Thornton became the last man to sign the Declaration of Independence — not because he was late to the cause, but because he refused to be excluded from it.
An Irish immigrant who arrived in New Hampshire as a boy, Thornton rose to become a respected physician, judge, and militia leader. When he finally reached the Continental Congress in November 1776, months after most signers had already put their names on the document, he insisted they reopen the books so he could add his signature. He would not be left out of the birth of a nation.
This four-episode series follows Thornton’s long journey from poor immigrant to successful New England doctor and revolutionary patriot. He lived to the age of 89 and died in 1803. His gravestone carries a simple, powerful inscription: “An Honest Man.”
A member of the Masonic fraternity, Thornton lived by the square with quiet determination. He wasn’t first. He wasn’t the most famous. But when it mattered most, he showed up — even if it was late — and stayed true to what he believed in. This is the story of a man who proved that principle and persistence can matter more than perfect timing.
