Summary
Shrewd bankers, astute politicians, godfathers of the Renaissance, glittering dukes... how history remembers Florence's most notorious family. But the Medici and their bloody path to power was built on murder, intrigue and conspiracies that stretched across three centuries.
Florence, 1429. Giovanni de Medici, the family patriarch, has been poisoned. In their quest for political power, the Medici have made bitter enemies in every corner of the republic. And now Giovanni's sons, Cosimo and Lorenzo, have become the hereditary dukes of a city where loyalty can always be bought. While Lorenzo hunts for their father's killer, Cosimo petitions their remaining allies as Italy heads towards civil war. But the Medici will need more than alliances to survive, otherwise their beloved Florence – and their dynasty – will drown in blood...

If, like me, you are drawn to the Medici family and their influence and effect on the city of Florence, then you will enjoy this book. It charts the rise of the Medici family as they aim to achieve success for their business and for their city. Their struggles within the city, with established and vested interests, mirror the larger struggles of Florence as it seeks to establish a lasting peace with its neighbours in Milan, Venice and Pisa. All this is communicated not dryly as per a scholarly book, but with life and energy while maintaining historically accuracy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the nice measured narration. You won’t look at Florence in the same way again! I would also highly recommend the Netflix series of the Medici.
