Summary
Eve Dallas is one tough cop. She’s got no problem dealing with a holiday reveler in a red suit who plunges thirty-seven stories and gives new meaning to the term “sidewalk Santa.” But when she gets back to the station and Trudy Lombard shows up, it’s all Eve can do to hold it together. Instantly, she’s plunged back into the past, to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized girl - trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits in front of her, smiling.

Trudy claims she just wanted to see how Eve was doing. But Eve’s husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise - and his suspicions prove correct when Trudy arrives at his office demanding money in exchange for keeping the ugly details of his wife’s childhood a secret. Barely restraining himself, Roarke shows her the door - and makes it clear that she’d be wise to get out of New York and never bother him or his wife again.

But just a few days later, Trudy’s found on the floor of her hotel room, a mess of bruises and blood. A cop to the core, Eve is determined to solve the case, if only for the sake of Trudy’s bereaved son. Unfortunately, Eve is not the only one to have suffered at this woman’s hands, and she and Roarke will follow a circuitous, dangerous path to find out who turned this victimizer into a victim.

Second time through on this series. The best narrator I have ever heard!

Another intense read. J.D. Robb knows how to keep you guessing. I think she goes over board with the sex but it is not unusual in this series.

This book has both mystery and humor. The characters are well defined and even though this is writen in the future, its easy to see yourself taking part in the investigation. As for the humor, there where several times that I laughed so hard that people next to me must have wondered if I was OK. I would love to hear any of the stories that featured Eve and Roarke that came befor this one, or any that will follow.

Another great job by JD Robb. I absolutely love this series so much that any other is just plain boring. Of course, a lot of this is due to the narrator. She does a fantastic job of changing her voice so much that you actually start to believe it's different characters. When listenting to a prior book, I knew right away it was Peabody, before she had even been introduced, just by the way the narrator changed her voice. Keep up the good work - you are spoiling us for any other writer!

A good story, but a bit long. After awhile, the story gets boring and you just want it to be over. Another book that would better in an abridged version.

This was another great JD Robb-Lt Eve Dallas novel. This particular story gave the reader a little more insight to Eve's past. Detective Peabody provides great comic relief and the narrator does a great job changing her voice and varying the tone to distinguish characters.

I loved it...J.D. Robb(aka.Nora Roberts) can sure write a book. I have never been so taken with anyone's writings before as I am with the In Death Series..I have read everyone of them, except this one I tried something different, I listened to it and it was just as great...smiles. I don't give 5 stars that easily but when it's a book that takes me away and lets me enjoy a good read or listening time like the In Death Series has I just can't help it..its one of those books you can't put down..smiles. Loved it!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good job J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts)!!!!!!!!

Maybe it was the reader, but I found this book annoying. Eve came across too obnoxious. And with less Peabody in this book, Eve became tedious.
