The first book in the Pier 3 Coffee Series is narrated by the duet pair Jennica Damon and Javi Wilder. This new adult story features a couple of family run businesses, a bakery and coffee shop in a small town that struggle to stay afloat. Alicia and her brothers started the coffee house together as a means of support for them all. Their goal was to get a few more years' income in order to buy the building. When the shop is threatened due to the landlord wanting to sell the building now rather than later, they scramble to find a way to survive. A secret from Olivia's past that she never shared is revealed as to why she needs the business to not go under. The bakery that provides them with baked goods to sell is a multi generation family business. Mateo one of the sons really wants to pursue other employment, but is tethered by family obligations to keep things going. Alicia and Mateo have a friends with benefits relationship that has reached a point that they are no longer on the same page regarding their relationship. Both families are experiencing challenging issues putting pressure on the couple. The characters are realistically written with believeable challenges. I wouldn't call it a romance book but a new adult literary fiction with a bit of relationship as a minor storyline as there is a greater emphasis on the other new adult friends and family members and their relationships and struggles. There is not a huge cliffhanger at the end, but the ongoing issues aren't resolved either leading the reader to having to read book 2 if you really need that resolution.
