Summary
A letter. A phone call. And just like that, Nellie’s life will never be the same.

Reeling from heartbreak, Nellie never expected to inherit everything from her beloved Aunt Lil—the charming beach house, the quirky poodle, and a one-way ticket back to Muddleford, the seaside town she hasn’t seen in twenty years.

As she steps onto the golden sands of her childhood, memories come rushing back: the salty breeze, the laughter, and a stolen kiss with a boy named Jack. Now, Jack is still in town—only he’s all grown up. A devilishly handsome vet with every pet owner (and Nellie) swooning over him. The sparks are undeniable, but just as Nellie dares to believe in love again, she uncovers a secret about Jack that could shatter everything.

With her heart on the line and the past refusing to stay buried, Nellie faces an impossible choice: walk away from Muddleford forever or risk it all for a future she never imagined.

A heartwarming and uplifting summer read about love, second chances, and finding a home where you least expect it—perfect for fans of Carole Matthews, Nicola May, and Milly Johnson.

The beginning was actually really cute, and I was in the mood for a cosy small-town romance, so I thought I'd enjoy this a lot more than I did. Unfortunately, it got boring way quicker than I expected. Nelly was okay at first, but she became so frustrating as the story went on. Every time Jack was around, she'd throw herself a little pity party, constantly comparing herself to Natalia and worrying about how Natalia would react whenever Jack showed her any attention. She knew some of the things they were doing weren't exactly appropriate, but still kept doing them anyway. And while Natalia definitely fat-shamed her, Nelly never actually stood up for herself—she just skinny-shamed Natalia in her head instead. ‍️ Then, right at the end, Jack casually makes a comment about her weight by asking what she'd been eating, and she just laughs it off? So Natalia gets called out for it, but Jack gets a free pass? Make it make sense. By the end, Nelly's entire personality seemed to revolve around Jack. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, but it was just them awkwardly dancing around each other over and over again. Not in a fun slow-burn way either—it was just kind of cringe. And "Nelly Bum" as a nickname...? Please. At one point I genuinely thought, "Did someone's grandma write this?" The dialogue, the characters, even the way everyone spoke just felt really dated. I looked up the author afterwards and saw that she started writing in her 50s. I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all, but the writing style definitely felt old-fashioned, and it just wasn't for me. I only finished it because it counted towards my reading challenge and I'd already read too much to DNF it.
