Unabridged Audiobook
An amazing story about an amazing human being and all he went through while becoming a leader of a foundation that he started in Haiti and his model has continued to be replicated throughout the world. The chapters are all engaging in different ways and the narrator does a great job of stylizing his voice to make the actual people recognizable as he reads. It will make you laugh, cry, be happy, sad, and angry as the discussion of medicine and medical treatment in the impoverished world beyond our western culture is discussed. Truly inspirational and I highly recommend this easy to listen to, true story of Paul Farmer.
what a wonderful life to emulate
It was ok. It was hard to pay attention for long chunks of time.
Kidder tells the story of one of the truly remarkable people of our era. Paul Farmer is a brilliant and independent thinker. His primary objective is to practice a preferential option for the poor, those who have no voice, in the area of medicine. He sees no reason why only the wealthy should have first rate health care. Farmer holds doctoral degrees from Harvard in medicine and anthropology. This combination has enabled him to take a holistic approach to medical care. He addresses immediate medical issues as well as the environmental factors that make the medical concerns likely. Farmers works part-time in Boston, but his primary work is done in Haiti and other third world countries. One cannot read this book without being challenged to review one's own priorities and thinking about wealth, poverty, medicine and the dignity of every human being.
This was a good book but not great. I would have liked more interesting stories. Wonderful about Haiti
Paul Farmer uses his life to model care and shows what can be done when a person puts their heart and passion into something. Refreshing to see someone reaching out to benefit someone else and not their own gain. Summed up well in a recent U2 lyric - "Where you live should not decide whether you live or whether you die."
Very interesting man...good story!!
