Unabridged Audiobook
A captivating heart wrenching story over several generations of conflict in Vietnam. A sensitive approach to a lot of hatred and wrong doing. Poetic,, well written and excellently narrated. Highly recommended! Thank you for writing this book Nguyen.
Really moving book, great to understand some of the struggles of the Vietnamese people.
Sensitive rendition of this family's story, beautifully narrated. I loved listening to this book.
Such a beautiful book, I felt like I was in those times, of the Vietnam war, perfectly and realistic described by the author. Really enjoyed listening to this audiobook.
After reading this, I feel I have some insight into the historical struggles of the Vietnamese people.
A very interesting story about 1ife in North Vietnam from WW2 through the Vietnam War through the eyes of a woman and four generations of her family. Prior to the Vietnam War, her family were land owners of a farm with many workers. Her life under colonization, the Japanese, and Communism was so challenging for families to stay together and keep their sanity. The narrator was good. The reason I gave this four stars is because the author goes back and forth through time so often, which made it harder for me to follow the story.
Great piece about the other side of the Vietnam war...from the innocent Vietnamese people whoose country was torn apart.
Beautiful saga of love and loss
Beautifully written and performed. An author to watch.
Narrator needed to do better with varying voice. A good view of what it was like for multigeneration In Vietnam
Very interesting story, I learned a lot about the history of Vietnam from the point of view of the Vietnamese. A shame though that the characters don't have much depth, so it feels the story is made up to tell the history behind it. I loved the proverbs and names in Vietnamese, also because of the native speaking narrator, who did a great job. The names were hard to get and remember, so I looked up a family tree on the Internet, which was a great help.
Is the first vip credit audiobook that I really like, it's a bit slow sometimes but the story is very interesting and the voice of the narrator is great. I learned a lot about Vietnam and Vietnam war.
I was profoundly moved by this story of courage and strength. To hear the experiences of the Vietnamese people from their perspective and to discover that hope and kindness were never lost, even during the very worst events in their history, was so deeply inspiring.
I enjoyed this book. For me it was about family, where people love and support each others through terrible times.
A remarkable book telling a difficult and sometimes heartrending story. Even having lived through this period of history did not prepare me for the gruesome details of what happened on an individual basis. The language of the book gives one the flavor of a non-native speaker telling the story, which made it more realistic. The narrator is excellent and it was good to hear some of the native language inserted. I'm glad I had the opportunity to listen to this book.
It is a beautifull book. Interesting to hear about this part of history from the Vietnam point of view. The narrator has a very pleasant voice but it was sp pleasant and soft that I sometimes had some troule concentrating on the story.
An absolutely amazing book. I enjoyed every bit of it. One of the most beautiful novels I have ever read.
I loved this book. My ears found the descriptions to be musical. The story is brilliantly laid out to illustrate the relentlessness of war and its aftermath through with a compassion that is rigorous as well as forgiving.
The narrative jumped between the past and present much, without indication. After a few hours of listening, I could tell by the narrative. Difficult at first but worked out. Excellent story and narration.
What a beautiful, poetic, compassionate and healing novel - a listening pleasure.
This is now one of my favorite books. I had no idea how hard it was for the North Vietnamese. I only knew that we helped the SouthVietnamese. There are definitely parallels with what’s happening in our country and what happened under Nazi rule. The characters were brought to life beautifully by the narrator and she helped me visualize the beauty of their country.
Told with such eloquence; beautiful, almost musical language. This author is truly talented.
