Summary
In Agatha Christie’s class mystery Murder on the Links, Hercule Poirot attempts to unravel the grisly conundrum of not one, but two dead bodies discovered on a French golf course.

An urgent cry for help brings Hercule Poirot to France. But he arrives too late to save his client, whose brutally stabbed body now lies face down in a shallow grave on a golf course.

But why is the dead man wearing an overcoat that is too big for him? And for whom was the impassioned love letter in the pocket? Before Poirot can answer these questions, the case is turned upside down by the discovery of a second, identically murdered corpse.…

This is only the third time I've read a Poirot mystery so I am by no means an expert on the character. I will say I thoroughly enjoyed Murder on the Links. The book at 6 hours is just the right length. It is tightly written with many twists and turns, yet everything makes sense by the time it is over. Poirot arrives on the scene in response to a request for his help only to find the man who has summoned him has been murdered. Even as Poirot investigates, another body is discovered. Add to that an official detective who disagrees with Poirot every step of the way. Ms. Christie put together an entertaining murder mystery. Add to that, Hugh Fraser as the narrator. I thought his narration was a cut above the usual reading. When I looked him up I discovered he portrayed Captain Hastings on television in Poirot, making him a natural to narrate this book. I recommend it!

I adore Agatha Christie. However, sometimes I struggle because there are certain recurring themes like inheritances, secret marriages, and so on that always put me off. Nevertheless, these mysteries ALWAYS win me over by the end. Hercule Poirot is one of my favorite detectives in fiction, right up there with Sherlock Holmes. This story, in particular is fun as it puts Poirot against another detective, and we get to see how a more traditional detective might work against Poirot's simple methodical logic. I cannot recommend stories like this enough. I know with movies like Knives Out coming out with 'Who-done-its', it might be worth giving this story a chance. Also, I originally was going to give this rating a 4/5 but then just listening to the conclusion once more, and I can't help but give it that 5th star. Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan has earned this for a nearly perfect read.
