Trading in Texas heat for Maine's tangy salt air, Natalie Barnes risked it all to buy the Gray Whale Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast on Cranberry Island. She adores whipping up buttery muffins and other rich breakfast treats for her guests until Bernard Katz checks in. The overbearing land developer plans to build a resort next door where an endangered colony of black-chinned terns is nesting. Worried about the birds, the inevitable transformation of the sleepy fishing community, and her livelihood, Natalie takes a public stand against the project. But the town board sides with Katz. Just when it seems like things can't get any worse, Natalie finds Katz dead. Now the police and much of the town think she's guilty. Can Natalie track down the true killer before she's hauled off to jail . . . or becomes the next victim?

I really enjoyed this book! I would definitely recommend it and plan to look for others by Karen MacInerney. Why the 3 stars? Honestly, I feel like we give anything decent 4 or 5 stars and I’m trying to give more realistic ratings and reviews. A 3 is still a really good rating. This book is an easy listen, and well written. The author gives great scene descriptions, especially when she’s cooking. If you like cozy mysteries give this one a try! I didn’t mind the narrator. I saw a review where she has a speech impediment and I didn’t get that. What it sounds like to me is that the recording was not as smooth so it had some feedback with the s sound. It also sounded like the narrator was trying to disguise an accent so was speaking very slowly and deliberately. Maybe an over-enunciation. I put it on 1.2 speed and that helped.

I enjoyed the story but I found the narrators speech impairment difficult to listen to.
