“Los negociantes de la Puerta del Sol,” by Carmen de Burgos, is both a love story and a picaresque novel. It is a love letter to Madrid’s iconic square (Puerta del Sol) —evoked through the everyday characters who inhabit it and the history that shaped it—and a picaresque tale of the rogues who, in the early twentieth century, waited for their chance in the cafés and side streets around Puerta del Sol.

Told from the viewpoint of a victim who, captivated by the place’s spell, comes to see it as the stage for their triumphs and windfalls, the novel draws us into a bustling yet unforgiving Madrid, portrayed with naturalistic realism and deep empathy.
