Some family treasures are the people whose stories go untold.

Seeking relief from the city, a weary fisherman finds a welcome at a country house beside a stream. A kindly farmer and his daughter, Marthy, offer cool spring water, easy conversation, and a country dinner he will never forget.

But as the farmer shares his family’s history, another story begins to emerge. Marthy is his treasured “nest egg,” the daughter he hopes will always remain at home. Beneath her capable, generous manner lies a history of hopes and disappointments her father has never quite understood.

In A Nest Egg, James Whitcomb Riley blends gentle humor, distinctive rural voices, and quiet poignancy in a story of family attachment and unspoken longing. Narrated by Chris Velasco, this American classic explores the people we cherish and the feelings we sometimes fail to see.
