Summary
Named a Most Anticipated Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, AV Club, Variety, The Boston Globe, The Minnesota Star Tribune, Vulture, Men’s Health, Book Riot, New York Post, Goodreads, AARP, Paste, and more—one of the top psychological thrillers of 2025!

From Stephen King, “a writer of towering brilliance” (The Spectator), a “cinematic, brilliant” (The New York Times) psychological thriller exploring vigilante justice and a diabolical serial killer—featuring the beloved Holly Gibney and a dynamic new cast of characters.

When the Buckeye City Police Department receives a disturbing letter from a person threatening to “kill thirteen innocents and one guilty” in “an act of atonement for the needless death of an innocent man,” Detective Izzy Jaynes has no idea what to think. Are fourteen citizens about to be slaughtered in an unhinged act of retribution? Izzy turns to her friend Holly Gibney for help.

Meanwhile, controversial and outspoken women’s rights activist Kate McKay is embarking on a multi-state lecture tour, drawing packed venues of both fans and detractors. Someone who vehemently opposes Kate’s message of female empowerment is targeting her, disrupting her events, and growing bolder. Holly is hired to be Kate’s bodyguard—a challenging task with a headstrong employer and a determined adversary driven by wrath and his belief in his own righteousness.

Featuring a riveting cast of characters, including world-famous gospel singer Sista Bessie and an unforgettable villain addicted to murder, King’s twinned narratives converge in a chilling and spectacular conclusion—a feat of storytelling only this master of suspense and horror could pull off.

Between this book and SK’s last book “Holly”, I think he’s lost the touch. It may be time for retirement Mr. King. The characters are great and nobody brings them to life like King, but the story is tired, and the political rhetoric just doesn’t belong in escapist fiction. One reads Stephen King for the unexpected, the fantastic, for that story no one else could have thought of. This just isn’t it.

I’ve been a big fan of King for approximately 40 years and this novel, by far, is one of the worse I’ve ever read. Such a big let down as I waited patiently for 6 weeks for it to be released.

Profile Avatar Reta M. May 2025

this was the least favorite of all the Stephen King books that I have read over the years I really wished I would have saved my credit

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2025

I did not bother to waste another 4 hours to finish it. I will try another time but I am disappointed.

Profile Avatar Nicolas V. Jun 2025

I adore King. I reread his books. No one compares. And WTF is this.? All this did was make me wish something good will appear next. This isn’t it. Even Holly disappointed me. Steve you are so much better than this

the worst. I couldn't even follow it. too bad I can't get my money back. I never thought one of his books would be so terrible. I don't know If I'm going to keep buying. other book clubs have free and 1 book a month and the prices aren't this much. thank you.!

I like many others am a huge Stephen King fan, but this book was very disappointing. This book seems to be very influenced by political issues going on right now and is heavily implemented with the Betty Sue initiative or the girl boss. I am definitely not opposed to a female being the hero of a story, but when every female is portrayed as intelligent and strong, and all men are portrayed as weak, dumb and mentally unstable. I just really can’t get into it. On a positive note the narrator did absolutely amazing and is quite the singer.

Stephen King strikes again. Dark as always.

Profile Avatar Ruth Kendall Jun 2025

Excellent! Love Holly Gibney.

Profile Avatar Cynthia B. Jun 2025

not my favorite by Steven King but still a great book by my favorite author. great character development and twisty plot.

Profile Avatar Chris B. Jun 2025

i have read and listened to over 1000 books, this is without a doubt the worst one ever. mr. king should be ashamed of himself, pitiful.

Profile Avatar Rick T Jun 2025

Have you been a Stephen King fan for the longest time I found this particular novel less than inspiring and just two political. The whole girl boss thing just got old. For me at least not really inspired at all.

Profile Avatar Desmond Jun 2025

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The continuation of Holly is such a pleasing read. I actually do not think it was a step back as other reviews suggested but just another form of writing mastery. Mr. King continues to deliver through personal issues and outside factors that may affect his writing in which the audiences do not acknowledge. The only downer to the book was the narrator, sometimes it was hard to differentiate between softer voice characters and Holly's verbal mannerisms are much different than how Will Patton reads (which i enjoy). I gave her three stars as she vocally talented when it comes to singing. Rather than just read the parts characters were singing she sung them and it was great.

Profile Avatar Joe Jun 2025

another great story

Profile Avatar Angi H. Jun 2025

not the normal scare but it's good. Holly is Holly and still excellent. the story is relatable and enjoyable.

Profile Avatar Cookei May 2025

Encore I really enjoy Mr. Kings books, This book right here let's you realize how vast his talent is to me. I don't give spoilers, because what I like you might not. I will tell you this after the credits and thank you from author to his staff and friends and family. There's a treat thats simply delicious!!! Thank you Mr. King for another wonderful book. Peace

He’s my favorite author/ movie creator anyway I love I

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2026

i had just read Kings Fairytale, and was hoping this would be as good as.. this isn’t his best work. i don’t think he’d be surprised to hear his fans were disappointed after i listened to his epilogue. this book was disjointed, if you didn’t already know Holly, this would not stand alone for character development. Also, not great narration of this one. I recognized her from other stories, but this wasn’t her best either.

Profile Avatar Annette P. Jan 2026

Disappointing and predictable. There's no mystery in where everything is oh-so-coincidentally going to collide. It's lazy. The narration is great.

Profile Avatar Derrek L. Dec 2025

I love that King continues to build this world with Holly! I love her character and for all the criticism of the politics in this book King has not hidden his beliefs and this was the world we live in. He just builds a world based off what has happened in ours. I hope there are few more Holly novels in the works!!

Profile Avatar Jeff J. Dec 2025

Good story. Glad King brought Holly into another book. It diffenly grips you and keeps you wanting more.

Profile Avatar Adolfo S. Dec 2025

Best story teller of all time.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2025

Not his best, but an ok book.

Profile Avatar MTurtle2 Dec 2025

3.5 stars. Good mystery.

Profile Avatar Scott N. Dec 2025

Amazing narration.

Profile Avatar Christy L. Nov 2025

I've read most of King's work and this was one of my least favorite. Other than Holly, nothing makes me like any of the other characters in this book. Not sure why I'm supposed to be interested in what happens to this Kate lady, but nothing makes me like her enough to care what happens to her. Trig isn't a compelling character for me either. I hate to say it, but i do not like this book and am only listening to finish it because i already paid for it.

Profile Avatar Stephaniecg Oct 2025

Great book

Profile Avatar Charles Marshall Oct 2025

Not his best work. Kind of drawn out. It was just okay to me.

Profile Avatar John Rav Oct 2025

King and Holly do it again! King writes another tale, featuring Holly, a character that continues to shine, As well as allowing us to see other people in Holly’s universe.

Profile Avatar Robert W. Sep 2025

The Holly Gibney saga continues to entertain. SK truly is a master storyteller

Profile Avatar Alyce B. Sep 2025

Enjoy King's sense of humor.

Profile Avatar Klarue67 Sep 2025

Very different compared to his others works but it was still a good listen.

Profile Avatar Mark P. Sep 2025

Fascinating and timely, with an interwoven texture of his everlasting thrill, intrigue and dread.

Profile Avatar Tina G. Sep 2025

Was not at all what I expect from Stephen King. I love Stephen King, but hated this book. I had it on my wish list and couldn't wait for the release, such a BIG let down. Now I'm just trying to get to the end, doubt the last 45 minutes are going to get any better. I think it was categorized incorrectly. I'll stick to his old stuff and go to other authors for my thriller/horror fix.

Profile Avatar Matthew M. Aug 2025

Decent, kept me interested. narration was good, story was just okay.

Profile Avatar Carol G. Aug 2025

Another great Polly story by Stephen King. It was thrilling and exciting and loved the way the stories intersected. I can’t wait for the next book. That includes. Holly narrator did a great job and she can sing!

Profile Avatar Jacquew Aug 2025

Loved this book!

Profile Avatar Mike R. Aug 2025

Good

Profile Avatar Joshua R. Aug 2025

Stephen King never fails!

Profile Avatar Jackson G. Jul 2025

Fast moving enjoyed the book

Profile Avatar SkumLord82 Jul 2025

I thought the book was brilliant and the best of all of the books where Holly Gibney is the protagonist. Mr. King has still got it. And the narrator was excellent. I would have sworn more than one person was reading this book if I didnt know better. I really enjoyed this book. A credit well spent!

Profile Avatar Mike F. Jul 2025

Good listen

Profile Avatar Michael D. Jul 2025

Good book. Amazing narrator.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2025

Boring; limited story line; no character development. Worst Steven king book ever written… and I’ve read them all.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2025

Really well done, the many storylines contributed to the overall story and kept it interesting.

Profile Avatar Marla N. Jun 2025

The narrator was good, the story was anticlimactic and was more a politics than story. I miss stories.

Profile Avatar Nikkibobicky Jun 2025

Another great Holly Gibney novel. The narrator can sing as well as narrate

Profile Avatar Marlene P. Jun 2025

I loved it and loved the narrator!

Profile Avatar LMitchell Jun 2025

As a longtime fan of Stephen King, I enjoyed seeing the return of some favorite characters from recent years. Like most Stephen King books however, even if you’ve never picked up a king book you’ll love this one. The narrator was easy to listen to, and the book was a great read

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2025

The ending was disappointing. And I had issues with what felt like a speed reading in the first few chapters.

Profile Avatar Su-san L. Jun 2025

Holly is one of my favorite SK characters, so was very excited to read. Enjoyable, but not as riveting as some of his other works.
