Summary
A Civil War–era historical novel featuring the first female agents in the Pinkerton National Police Agency, who work to foil an assassination attempt on President Lincoln’s life.

The year is 1861, the eve of Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. For Kate Warn, the first female private detective in American history, the only assignment tougher than exposing a conspiracy to assassinate the new president is training her new mentee, Hattie MacLaughlin, in the art of detection. The two women’s mission to save the president takes them from the granges of rural Maryland to the heart of secessionist high society, and sets them on a collision course that could alter the course of history. When Kate’s cover is blown, Hattie must choose between saving her new friend, and her country. Based on a true story.

Worth a listen - talented narrator. A very good read that I found drew excellent parallels of the divisions of today to the divisions of the civil war - one side wanting expanded freedoms and a move forward and the other clinging to a past-gone, oppressive way of life. Well written, though as other reviews have noted, some of the language seems to be a bit too modern for the time period. This only slightly took away from the story and was worth ignoring. For those of you avoiding the over-used theme of sexual assault in the telling of women’s stories, you will be happy with this one. (There is one short, though off-putting of course, instance of groping but no other sexual violence.) There is plenty of physical violence, but it is more of what you would expect in any book about war and spies. I did not find it to be gratuitous, but I’ll say it was well described, maybe too well in some instances (I’m not a fan of blood and gore). I’m hoping there will be future books in this series and I didn’t really care much about how accurate the historical events were. The characters were well developed but not deeply insightful, focusing more on the story which I enjoyed. It’s pretty action packed.

Loved the narrator. Easily went from male to female voice. Some parts were a little too gory for me. Interesting listen tho. I really think woman make better spy’s.

i don't care how good the book is, let's not romanticize the Pinkertons. They've committed atrocities and were used for union busting, and are still active to this day on corporate payrolls.
