Unabridged Audiobook
E. Jean warned us listeners at the beginning that she was not a professional audiobook narrator, but nobody else but E. Jean could have told her very personal story. It was an interesting behind-the scenes look at the two trials against Donald Trump, for rape and sexual abuse and also for defamation. It was written by a professional writer (E. Jean), who knows how to bring the reader/listener right into the middle of the action. As I write this review, Trump is appealing the two juries’ decisions and the huge monetary damages awarded to E. Jean. Hopefully the original decisions will be upheld!
This book is richly written, E. Jean Carroll is smart and sharp and in my opinion one of the bravest women on the planet!! I'm glad the judge wrote an opinion that what he did to her was legally rape. I don't understand how they convicted him on all other counts but not that one. E. Jean you rock and you made me laugh.
I'm not usually one for author narrations, but this book is a notable exception, as Carroll's reading of her own story in her own words is pitch-perfect. Hilarious and raw by turns, the casting of shade is exquisite (the public shenanigans of Alina Habba, ESQUIRE will evoke more laughter than rage from me henceforth), but the author's trauma also comes through in visceral ways; her voice occasionally breaks in crucial moments and that's earned. Carroll's fierce love for the allies who helped her through the last few years comes through beautifully, and the intimacy of this telling made me feel like one of them. Brava, E. Jean!
She was able to put humor into a very sad event that happened to her. I have been raped and I can't find anything funny about it. Her story gave me help to try and move forward even though I carry a grief even after 35 years have passed. I am now 75 years old.
Loved it! I'm glad I listened to this audio book and did not read it, because it was narrated by the author, who did an excellent job on both writing and narrating it. E.Jean's ability to insert humor into this disgusting story and to describe her feelings are admirable! I had a hard time pausing it to do other things!
E. Jean Carroll and I arrived in NYC in the same year (1980) and the same age (10 years too late for me). I bought this book on a whim, thinking it would probably be somewhat repetitive and depressing. Ha! I was so wrong. Usually I do not like author narrators. "Hire a professional!" I shout to the walls. But in E. Jean's case, she is the perfect person to tell her story. I love her observations about the human condition and the humans around her. I love hearing her ideas about fashion and how to buy smart. Most of all, I love her vivid descriptions of all the heavy hitters in the courtroom; the intelligent and ethical judge; and the steaming, sputtering opposition. The story is riveting; I can't wait for it to fade a little so I can listen again. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
Enjoyed it but the # of times I heard "She says" so "I say" was annoying to the point I wished I had the hard copy and not the audio.
