Summary
“Will keep readers on the edge of their seats.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Who is THE NOWHERE MAN?

He is spoken about only in whispers. He comes to those in greatest need of his protection. There is no enemy he cannot fight. He lives by his own code. He takes no prisoners. His name is Evan Smoak.

Taken from a group home when he was young, Evan was raised and trained as an Orphan, an off-the-books black box program designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence asset: An assassin. Evan was Orphan X―until he used everything he’d learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man. But now, his new life has been interrupted by a surprise attack from an unlikely source. Captured, drugged, and spirited off to a remote location, Evan finds himself heavily guarded from everything he knows. His captors think they have him trapped and helpless in a virtual cage, but they do not know that they’re dealing with one of the deadliest, most resourceful men on earth.

“Superb on all levels and a must-read for all thriller fans.”―Providence Journal

“A masterpiece of suspense and thrills.”―Associated Press on Orphan X

Better than Book 1 because there’s a great little twist near the beginning that makes the story interesting. Evan is off helping yet another desperate female. But he slips up, misses an important and obvious, even common, clue and that leaves him captured by this random evil dude who wasn’t even fishing for the Nowhere Man. OK, so that slip up was too convenient but I can forgive it because without it Evan wouldn’t have landed in such a compromised position. From a craftsmanship point of view, it was a little heavy handed. But from a story enjoyment aspect, it was OK. Evan gets to spend time as a pampered pet. There’s decent food, walks on the property in the woods, exploding pinecones, and a sex slave. Yet Evan still chaffs at his confinement. Meanwhile, he’s being hunted by his boyhood nemesis, Van Sciver. The story is really good about mixing in the action with moments of reflection on Evan’s past. Once again, the ladies come in different flavors of sexualized female. Some he rescues, one is the wholesome woman next door, and again we have sex kitten Candy. I would really love to see more from Candy. She’s a highly trained Orphan herself but her page time is mostly about her sex appeal. We’re told she has all these other skills, but we rarely see her using them. The ending was very exciting and satisfying. There’s all sorts of threats, dangerous villains, explosions, and a bit of payback. I hope the series continues to improve. 3.5/5 stars. The Narration: Scott Brick once again gives us a cool, calm, & collected Evan Smoak. I also like his voice for the main villain who managed to capture Evan. His female voices, while each is distinct, could use a little more femininity. Brick’s little kid voices are good. The pacing is spot on & there are no tech issues with this recording. 4.5/5 stars.
