Professor Parkins does not believe in ghosts. A sensible Cambridge academic, he has come to the quiet seaside town of Burnstow for a peaceful golfing holiday. While exploring the ruins of an old Templar site, he finds a small bronze whistle with a mysterious Latin inscription.

He puts it to his lips and blows. A wind rises from the empty shore. Soon Parkins will learn that some things buried on lonely beaches were never meant to be called back, and that the empty bed in his room may not stay empty for long.

First published in 1904 in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, this is the most famous tale by M.R. James, the master of the English ghost story. It is a chilling classic of supernatural horror that has inspired generations of writers and filmmakers.
