At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life—sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition—its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.

I loved the book. It took me awhile to adjust to the structure: each chapter started a new story either with different characters or picking up on Olives story several years later. But she appeared in all the chapters so different facets of her personality opened up as the book progressed. Her story’s showed the inner Olive and her sharp edges intially, smoothed to a sensitive often conflicted character I eventually began to relate to. I loved the authors writing and the poetic beauty at the end of each chapter always made me pause to savor it. The narrator was very good but I felt her Olive voice was a little too abrupt which I don’t think I would have imagined if i was just reading the book. That would be my only complaint. But I still highly recommend the audio book!

A terrific read! Her characters were relatable and the narrative flow was easy and natural. A story that was carefully woven with clever diligence. Brilliant!
