Summary
USA Today bestselling author Robert Rotstein is back with The Out-of-Town Lawyer, a gripping legal thriller that throws a community into chaos and questions the very foundations of our morality.

The Quartz County, Alabama, district attorney has charged Destiny Grace Harper with murdering her unborn twins—a crime punishable by death. However, Alabama v. Harper isn’t your ordinary homicide case. Harper’s babies suffered from a rare disorder called TTTS, a fatal condition if left untreated, but correctable with minimally invasive surgery. Harper refused the surgery on religious grounds, resulting in the death of both babies, and now Harper is on trial.

Enter Elvis Henderson, a traveling criminal defense attorney who roams the country in his campervan. He receives assignments from Hazel Curnow, a once iconic trial lawyer turned recluse. When Curnow assigns Elvis the Harper case, he balks—Quartz County is his home turf. He left Alabama under a dark cloud at age eighteen and has no intention of returning.

When Elvis arrives to meet his paralegal, Margaret Booth, they immediately realize the case is fraught with complications: a desperate client whose story keeps shifting; a local populace who vociferously defend the rights of the unborn; a charismatic minister whose family lords over the town; a ruthless DA with political ambitions; an old-school judge who relishes handing down capital convictions; and a sheriff who might just want Elvis dead.

An action-packed ride to a shocking verdict, The Out-of-Town Lawyer is a gripping legal thriller that explores family love, reconciliation, and the moral and legal issues that draw a fine line between tragedy and crime.

Good read

This was such a great book and the narrator made it even better! It was thrilling and interesting while educational on our judicial system. I can’t say enough about how well the narrator did with the southern Alabama accent spot on! Highly recommend!

It’s doubtful that the writer has even been to Alabama much less actually interacted with someone from the South. The negative stereotypes are astounding and unbelievable.

If you believe christians are ignorant biased jerks and southerners are morons this is the book for you . I figured the story line pretty quickly but the misuse of scripture was and I’m from the South.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love books set in the South and a good Southern lawyer. The narrator was excellent and held my interest with his smooth, Southern voice. It felt like home. The book was timely and showcased how backwards Southern states, and small town, can be when it comes to women. While this book tackled a serious matter, it was also heartwarming and funny, at moments. Wasn’t heavy, at all. Great listen.

Love the book and the narrator was on point

Good book based on things still continuing to happen in this time period (aka 2026). I found it to be a little dramatic but again, these abortion laws are extremely dramatic themselves based solely off of people’s personal religious beliefs.

Entertaining and thought provoking story.

Excellent and timely plot. One of the best audio books I've heard lately.

I really enjoyed this story. The narrator was fantastic at bringing it to life. So good when you greatly enjoy an audio read.

Forced myself to finish this, just to see the outcome. Being an intelligent, devout follower of Jesus, from Alabama, I felt this story is very demeaning. Author definitely hit all the stereotypes that ignorant progressives have of the South. The southern “accent” of the narrator is ridiculous. And the story ending seems very rushed and anti-climactic. Will not read another book by this author!

I enjoyed this. Kept me guessing until the end.

Fantastic read. I wish it wasn’t over.

Well researched. Gripping court drama of how religious belief conflicts with the law.

Profile Avatar Heidi K. Nov 2025

Very good listen! Enjoyed the narrator!

Profile Avatar Ruth Kendall Nov 2025

I liked this book so much I was hoping it was first of a series but doesn't seem to be. If you like courtroom drama and interesting characters, you'll like this book.

Loved it.

Profile Avatar Harriet M. Oct 2025

It was good, but I felt like I was listening to a book that an Alabama John Grisham would have written.

Excellent legal thriller, one of the best I’ve read. Can’t believe I got this from the monthly freebie list!

Profile Avatar Alliea Oct 2025

This was a good one--kept you guessing. The ways the main character was flawed made him seem more real. What he gets away with is maybe a little unrealistic, but I was willing to suspend disbelief to stay in the story.

Profile Avatar Teresa F. Oct 2025

He nailed the view of the government, religion and a woman’s rights to her body in 2025

Profile Avatar Jack B. Oct 2025

Could decide whether it was a dark comedy or a drama but well written. Good character development and dialogue with a surprise ending.

Profile Avatar Carol M. Oct 2025

Great story. Really good legal drama-didn't expect to like it as well as I did. Kept me interested the whole way through.

Profile Avatar Vicki M. Oct 2025

Love courtroom stories! The characters all from one small town and all with a history was entertaining providing intrigue as old wounds were bloodied. Narration was good!

Profile Avatar Tanya B. Oct 2025

Really good! Excellent narrator.

Profile Avatar Maureen L. Oct 2025

Concerning historical view, it’s a great book. I wasn’t crazy about the main character because he was just a little too unbelievable for me but at the same time the twist and turns of all the characters made it interesting.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2024

Very good story that was relevant and engaging.

Profile Avatar Lindy Parr Nov 2024

Really enjoyed this book.

Profile Avatar Tracey S. Oct 2024

Excellent read bit if a twist at the end. The Long winded bible references were hard to deal with but related to the whole case n are huge in the USA so had to be there. Narration was Excellent

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2024

At first, I wasn't sure what I thought of the main character, who has flaws introduced early on. I considered not finishing the book. I am glad I decided to continue, as the story and characters are engaging, and the narrator brings it to life. The characters' flaws help make them real and add depth to the story.

Should be made into a film. Excellent.
