Summary
After a brief and deadly civil war, in which forbidden weapons were used, Russia is just a fraction of what it used to be. The border of what now proudly calls itself the 'Moscow Empire' is set just a few hundred miles away from the capital, by the broad river Volga, now poisoned by the fallout. For years, nobody has come from the other side of the bridge. Until now...

I chose this book out of the free VIP section. I enjoyed the concept (I’m a sucker for dystopian/apocalyptic reads!) and the characters! I was looking for book 2 but so far there isn’t one on ABdotCom. The narrator was fantastic!

couldn't finish it

if you like the Metro series, you will love this. it is set in a similar enough world, but with a truly unique twist, great imagery, and an original mythos. Anyone who doesnt finish it is doing themselves a disservice.

it was good

The story is good, narrator also.

This was a slog to finish. I love dystopian but this story was too stinking depressing even for me. I took a couple breaks to read something else because I really wanted to find out how it ended, but it’s not a story I would ever re-read. It was well written, just not my cup of tea.

I thought this book was barely ok. Hard to finish but I did. Was waiting for the climax to draw me in or change directions on the story. Not really a distopian book as it tried to be. The narrator is great though considering with what he was working with.

Very good narrator

it is a good read.

This book might be okay to read, but it’s excruciating to listen to. Firstly, the narrator tries too hard, but more importantly, the characters do a lot of whining, crying, blubbering, shouting and singing. It’s very bad. Also, the author has some very strange ideas about how a 100 ton train moves. Maybe it’s a Russian thing, but it’s an unbelievable stretch that starving people would be so patriotic. Also, there’s no resolution… so be prepared to get a second book. ( no thanks )

Too many f-bombs. No normal person speaks like that. Get a vocabulary!!!

Couldn’t finish—I generally like dystopian but couldn’t get into this one. Very dark

Interesting Concept. Interesting story. Would like to listen to another book by this author.

Great narration! Captivating story!

Gave up after 6 hours. Nothing happened, lots of waffle. The narrator was great and done a good job with a very boring book.

Profile Avatar Shanan S. Jan 2025

Entertaining like watching a zombie apocalypse movie. A little bit repetitive and if it wasn’t part of a series I would rate it a 3

I really liked that book, it's dark, it's dystopian, that narrator is fantastic and it's a chance from the usual American storytelling. It's rough and definitely no feel good book but it was worth the time. Again: awesome narrator!
