Fritz Leiber’s A Pail of Air unfolds on an Earth torn from the Sun, where a surviving family shelters inside a tiny blanket “Nest,” guarding a precious fire and scooping buckets of frozen oxygen to breathe. Fritz Leiber (1910–1992) was one of the major voices of 20th-century science fiction and fantasy. Known for character-driven storytelling, vivid atmosphere, and imaginative ideas, he created the celebrated Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories and wrote acclaimed works including The Big Time.
