Plutarch’s Parallel Lives is a collection of biographies written by the Greek historian and philosopher Plutarch in the late 1st and early 2nd century CE. The work pairs the lives of famous Greek and Roman leaders, comparing them to explore character, virtue, leadership, and moral choices.

Each pair presents a Greek figure alongside a Roman counterpart—for example Alexander the Great with Julius Caesar, or Lycurgus with Numa Pompilius. After narrating each life, Plutarch often adds a short comparison highlighting similarities and differences in their personalities, values, and achievements.

Rather than focusing only on political events or military campaigns, Parallel Lives emphasizes moral character and personal habits. Plutarch believed that small details—such as anecdotes, decisions, and personal conduct—revealed a person’s true nature and offered lessons for readers. Through these stories, he aimed to teach ethical leadership and inspire reflection on virtue, ambition, courage, and corruption.

The collection became one of the most influential works of classical literature. It shaped Renaissance humanist thought and inspired writers such as William Shakespeare, who used it as a major source for plays like Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus.

Today, Parallel Lives remains a key text for understanding the personalities and moral ideals of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, as well as the enduring question of what makes a great leader.
