Summary
The Peterkins were a lovable but comically inept family that possess ingenuity, logic, resourcefulness, and energy--but not common sense. The general formula is that the family tries to solve some problem in an appealingly roundabout way, fails, and is eventually rescued by "the wise old lady from Philadelphia" who always cuts the Gordian knot with some effective but prosaic solution. The charm of the story is not in the plot, but in the telling, with the building up of layers of complication, and the affectionate fun poked at the not-quite-cartoonish characters. The "wise old lady's" solution is usually obvious to the reader, or even the young listener, from the start. (From Wikipedia)

What a strange family! What a patient Lady from Philadelphia! This family gets into muddle after muddle. Wanting to do things, but hindered by lack of intuition on how to do them. And often, it is a case of ‘too many Indians an not enough Chiefs’, because everyone with any view at all is allowed to have their say. And then the plan slips way in another diversion. Then most of the time they appeal to the beleaguered Lady from Philadelphia, even when she is poorly. Generally the stories are very silly and need to be taken in doses. Or you become very annoyed...just make another cup of coffee already! How a whole family, who seems to have plenty of money to carry out their strange schemes, could be so lacking in the brains department I do not know! And you wonder how they have even got to the Position or Station they seem to be in, who knows? However, now and again their plans twist around and bring a result that is better than they could imagine. And I can see some clever Victorian little boys falling about with laughter and putting their minds to the proper solution of the Peterkins family. I liked the reading. Not distracting which helped with a story so odd.
