Summary
The Phoenix and the Carpet is a fantasy novel for children, written in 1904 by E. Nesbit. It is the second in a trilogy of novels that began with Five Children and It (1902), and follows the adventures of the same five protagonists - Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and the Lamb. Their mother buys the children a new carpet to replace the one from the nursery that was destroyed in an unfortunate fire accident. Through a series of exciting events, the children find an egg in the carpet which cracks into a talking Phoenix. The Phoenix explains that the carpet is a magical one that will grant them three wishes per day. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Read by numerous narrators, most of which done a good job. The book however was written over 100 years ago, so whilst this could be a lovely story for kids, unfortunately the vocabulary is not relevant or correct today. I would love to see this rewritten with inclusive language that does not insult groups of people as this has the potential to be a wholesome story. It was eye opening to me to hear the language used to describe people of different races and cultures, and the divide between how boys and girls should act. Eye opening because this was a popular book at the time and clearly the language used was commonplace. I am glad that we have progressed from this, even if we still have a long way to go.

The adventurous episodes of our lives always read like they have been made I. Always fast and furious often difficult to recall in detail and yes unbelievably exciting.

I love this story. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I was a bit annoyed with the constant change of narrators. And some were great while others were lacking for various reasons.
