In her landmark Pilgrimage Dorothy Richardson pioneered the English ‘stream of consciousness’. Echoing the style of Marcel Proust, and predating the work of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, she created an intimate narrative on an epic scale. Across 13 novels – which she considered to be ‘chapters’ – she details the thoughts and experiences of Miriam Henderson, exploring her journey towards creative independence and revealing feminine consciousness in unprecedented depth.
In Volume 3 (containing Deadlock, Revolving Lights, The Trap and Oberland), Miriam, determined to chart her own path, turns to friendship, Quaker meetings and the Swiss Alps for answers. Richardson makes every sensation resonate; joys shimmer and disappointments cast shadows. What if real peace and creative freedom require leaving old dreams behind?
