The Poems of Sappho gathers the surviving poetry of one of ancient Greece’s most celebrated lyric poets. Writing on the island of Lesbos around the seventh and sixth centuries BCE, Sappho created intimate and emotionally powerful poems exploring love, longing, beauty, desire, memory, nature, friendship, and devotion.

Much of Sappho’s work survives only in fragments, preserved through ancient quotations and damaged manuscripts. Yet even in incomplete form, her poetry retains an extraordinary immediacy. She writes with remarkable sensitivity about the intensity of affection, the pain of separation, the fleeting nature of youth, and the beauty of those she admires.

Originally composed for musical performance, Sappho’s lyric poetry is personal, vivid, and deeply human. Her surviving verses offer a rare glimpse into the emotional and artistic world of archaic Greece while demonstrating why her work has continued to influence poets and readers for more than two millennia.
