As the shadows are lengthening on Midsummer Eve, Dan and his younger sister Una dash to the meadow near Pook’s Hill. They plan to act out their version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the curious cows. After three merry rehearsals, a sharp whistle rends the air. Suddenly the bushes part and before the actors’ startled eyes, Puck, Shakespeare’s famous hobgoblin, steps out.

 

Working his fairy magic, Puck whisks the children and the familiar meadow into the England of long ago. With bewitching tales, he conjures up fascinating characters—a passing Roman centurion, a talkative Norman knight, and a local Renaissance craftsman. In the lazy summer days whenever Dan and Una return to the meadow, Puck joins them for more exciting adventures, but afterwards, they’re never sure—did it really happen?
