Rare Earth Elements & Critical Minerals 2nd Edition: Science, Supply Chains & Statecraft

Course #16 from Unteachable Courses

Every few years a new headline warns that the world is running out of some element you'd never heard of — lithium, cobalt, gallium, the rare earths. This 24-lecture audio course takes those stories apart and shows what's really happening underneath.

The central idea is simple and, once you hear it, hard to unsee: criticality is almost never about the rock. The Earth isn't short of these elements. What's scarce is the refinery — the single plant, the one midstream step where a country or a company holds the valve. Scarcity lives in the supply chain, not the periodic table. The mechanism is the receipt.

Across twenty-four hours you'll travel from the magnets inside every EV motor and wind turbine, through the battery metals in your garage, the nuclear stack, the noble gases you can't drill for, the semiconductor and export-ban metals at the heart of today's trade fights, to the byproduct metals nobody mines on purpose that still hold up a jet engine's turbine blade.

Every element gets the same forensic treatment: its killer application, the physics that makes it irreplaceable, the real geography of who mines it versus who refines it, and the moment it became 'critical.' By the end you'll carry a set of instincts you can turn on any 'we're running out of X' story — and usually find the chokepoint yourself.

No jargon left unexplained. No panic, no doom, no villains — just how the world's most strategic materials actually move, who controls them, and why it matters now.

Twenty-four lectures on the elements hidden inside everything you own.
