Summary
When Bodie King, a con man known for (alleged) art thefts, steps into my antique store, I know I’m in trouble.

Not only is he charming, devastatingly handsome, and used to getting what he wants, but he’s looking for a priceless chess set.

The same one I’m searching for.

The race is on and I have to use everything I know about the chess set to get it before him.

Too bad he doesn’t play fair. (Or doesn’t scare easily at broadswords and fuzzy slippers.)

But when things take a dark turn and someone sets the antique store on fire, Bodie becomes an unlikely ally.

Now I just have to remember all the reasons I shouldn’t fall for the competition:

- He’ll steal the chess set out from under me if he can.
2) He’s a great kisser.
Oops, no. I mean, 2) He has deadly enemies.
- He's too distracting.
What happens when the lines are blurred, and he steals my heart?

Note: Rook to King is a romantic comedy adventure featuring morally gray characters.

Narrator: Kim Churchill & Wayne Mitchell My Reading Speed: 1.3x Have I Read The Book Before Listening to the Audio? Yes Overall Audio Impression: I really like Kim’s voice both in general & as Gracen’s inner voice in this audiobook! I liked that I could keep track of when we were hearing other characters speaking as well as knowing when it was Gracen’s inner thoughts vs speaking out loud. I liked Wayne’s voice for Bodie in general and how he’d voice the guys characters, but I wasn’t a fan of when he had to voice female voices. The girls all sound just about like the same person with his narration, but the guys have a range of vocal characteristics to them. Overall though, I really enjoyed rereading this story via the audiobook! It was so much fun getting to go back to the beginning of their story and see their cat and mouse approaches to each other as well as following their hunt for this mysterious chess board & pieces. I loved going back over the twist too! Favorite scenes: chess unexpected visitors (multiple) meet the family (multiple) Book Review: Reader’s Notes: – this is told from Gracen & Bodie’s points of view – there is some innuendo – there are about 12 curse words (mainly variations of the word for butt starting with an ‘a’, sometimes used in reference to their butt but not always) Review: I loved every single second of this story! I loved that it was a mix of romantic comedy & adventure with a con man (similar to Gracie Ruth Mitchell’s Juniper Bean Resorts to Murder in being different and mixing romantic comedy with something else). It was so interesting and at times unexpected! I loved that Bodie’s expectation was to be able to charm his way through Gracen got dashed as she snarked back instead. I guessed the identity of The Rook pretty early on, but I was doubting my guess later on in the story when something came up to suggest otherwise. I loved that Gracen hid some of her skills and why she was searching for the same chess set as Bodie. I loved the few times Bodie & Gracen had to pretend to be in love while both were still in the midst of falling for each other but knowing that their circumstances wouldn’t likely make a relationship between them possible. Some of my favorite scenes/moments included: unveiling The Rook’s identity, Bodie ‘kidnapping’ Gracen, Gracen holding Bodie at sword point, Gracen trouncing Bodie in chess, Bodie meeting Gracen’s family, and the last chapter. Summary: Bodie is a con man used to getting what he wants with his charm and charisma. But while on the hunt for his latest and hopefully last conquest, Bodie is thwarted in his usual ways by Gracen. Gracen is an authenticator, which is someone Bodie needs if he’s to be sure that he’s getting exactly what he is looking for. What is he looking for? A chess set worth millions of dollars, but they lead to a treasure rumored to be worth even more. And Bodie isn’t the only one searching for it. Gracen authenticates items to sell both online and in Annie’s Antiques for her boss. On the day she receives a chess piece rumored to be part of the map leading to a treasure worth more than the full chess set, trouble walks through the door. Bodie King is a well known con man and clearly has his eyes set on the treasure map chess set. He tries to con her into selling the piece directly to him, but she is onto him and refuses. But Bodie can’t seem to take no for an answer. He keeps popping up and Gracen is not thrilled, but when Bodie’s past causes trouble for them both, they go on the run towards the rest of the chess set and away from the quiet life Gracen led before meeting Bodie. It’s a race against time and other unknown treasure hunters. Who will find and obtain the full set first? And if it is Bodie or Gracen, what will they do with it and their temporary partners?
