Long winded and very disappointing

Led up to what was going to be a good end. Then it was a Disappointing end ,

The novel is typical of its time and genre. The narrator was ok but.. occasionally you could hear extra background noise i.e. phone ringing. Chair squeaking. Also some mispronunciation, in particular Mr Farquhar. Pronounced Farkwar (it's a Scottish name) my thoughts and opinion reflect those of other reviewers.

Somewhat tedious story but typical of the times and attitudes. Narration was a bit lacking in animation - too monotone and mispronounced names was an irritant!

It is interesting story. The narrator did an excellent job, the amount of detail was tiring.

I felt compelled to hear it through to the end..utterly miserable story of Victorian attitudes towards unmarried mothers, pious diatribe of a bygone era that serves to make you so happy to live in the present in the uk! Poor narration, lacking in variety of expression and a fair bit of poor recording, volume goes between loud and inaudible with a lot of background noise. Very frustrating but still wanted to know how it would end!!

Somewhat stilted narrative

I enjoyed this book. In a day and age where more focus is being given women’s rights, this 19th Century novel does an excellent job of portraying the plight of various classes of women. It also is well written though drags a bit off and on. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Victorian literature and a historical view of women’s condition. If you like Dickens you will probably like this book.
