Summary
The period of the Roman Republic, generally dated from 509-27 B.C., cemented Rome's position within the Italian peninsula as the Romans pushed ever outward to create the new provinces that formed the core of the vast Roman Empire. The period of the Republic saw those with the emerging powers having to grapple with new political situations, the administration of a diverse domain while contending with political disorder at home, commercial and financial expansion, and complex issues of land distribution, the role of the military, new ideas in religion, and the emergence of new class systems.
Among the people the Roman Republic displaced were the Samnites, whose communities built impressive sanctuaries, developed distinctive cultural traditions, maintained their own political institutions and participated in the wider world of ancient Italy long before Rome became the dominant power on the peninsula. Samnium was far more than an obstacle standing between Rome and the conquest of southern Italy. Stretching across the rugged mountains and valleys of the central Apennines, the region was home to numerous communities whose inhabitants developed ways of life suited to a landscape that was considerably less hospitable than the fertile plains of Campania to the west.
During the 4th century B.C., Roman power increasingly penetrated Campania and the regions surrounding Samnium, bringing the two peoples into a competition over territory, alliances, and access to some of the most prosperous regions of Italy. The resulting conflicts would become some of the longest and most consequential wars of the Roman Republic. The first Samnite war fought between 343 and 341 B.C. was followed less than two decades later by the Second Samnite war, a struggle lasting from 326-304 B.C., in which Rome suffered one of the most notorious humiliations in its entire history. It would take another full campaign before the Samnites were finally brought to submission.
