Summary
The Sea At Our Door is an autobiographical look at growing up almost as a child of the beach and sea between the ages of 10 and 14. The author swam, used a paddleboard with her brother, steered a raft with young siblings, rowed offshore and lay down fishing nets for families on the beach to haul in an evening fish catch. It was in the early 1960s when roaming along the beach, jumping off jetties and flying along the shimmering shallows on skimboards absorbed most of the author's spare time. Bike riding to look for tadpoles and explore other suburbs was also a part of her realm along with buidling a hidey hole under a rowboat and keeping a pet turtle. But there were some disturbing incidents including the murder of a women and her lover by the angry husband with gunshots ringing out around the corner from the author's home. But overall this is a good humoured, nostalgic look at a free roaming childhood near Adelaide, South Australia,
