Summary
The Serpent of Division features murder and mystery, a charming pirate, Oxford colleges and libraries, a buxom bookseller reminiscent of the Wife of Bath and a Persian physician with a fondness for Rumi. All have a part to play, as the granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer fights for survival against her ruthless neighbour Sir Robert Harcourt and the machinations of Elizabeth Wydeville, descendant of the serpent fairy Melusine and queen of Edward IV. It is set during the politically rocky final years of the Wars of the Roses.

Given that I grew up on Ellis Peters’ Cadfael books, it is unsurprising that I loved the Serpent of Division. This was well researched and cleverly written. Lady Alice and Tamsin were both interesting and relatable characters. The narrator was also excellent and well cast for the book. I highly recommend.

Interesting story, with many twists and turns.

An excellent book. Set during The War of Roses, it portrays an interesting look at a woman’s precarious position in that period of time. I look forward to listening to the other two books in this series when Audible secures them.

This was a freebie, so I can say it was worth a listen. The main character is certainly an interesting character whom I never was aware of, and the historical setting is an interesting one. There were some good points in the plot, but I found there to be too much talk and not enough continuation of the plot. I felt at times that it was slogging. That said, because I liked Alyce’s character, I would consider listening to a future installment. The narrator was OK, but something about her, even though she tried different voices and accents, that was not quite the level of the best of the narrators.

Interesting historical novel illuminating the life of a relatively unknown woman, Geoffrey Chaucer's granddaughter, the educated, wealthy, Alyce, Duchess of Suffolk. Also dramatizing a facet of the Hundred Years' War with realistic effect. The narrator was excellent, portraying characters with recognizable voices and accents, tailored to each individual- well-done!
