Summary
A lavish weekend party, a practical joke that goes murderously wrong, and stolen state secrets all transpire in The Seven Dials Mystery, by Agatha Christie. Full of her usual sly wit this clever murder mystery is a classic detective story featuring some of the characters from an earlier novel, The Secret of Chimneys: Lady Eileen (Bundle) Brent, Lord Caterham, Bill Eversleigh, George Lomax, Tredwell, and Superintendent Battle.

Punting and pranks seem to top the agenda for the party at Chimneys, the historic estate of Lord Caterham which Sir Oswald and Lady Coote have rented for the season. Gerry Wade was a champion sleeper, famous for over-sleeping, so a group of his fellow young houseguests decide to play a practical joke on him by setting eight alarm clocks to go off in his room one after another very early the next morning. When morning arrives, a footman discovers that Gerry is dead and one clock is missing.

Despite the arrival of the police, the young friends—led by Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent and charming "man about town" Jimmy Thesiger, take the investigation into their own hands. When another victim turns up dead, and there are whispers of a secret society called the Seven Dials and talk of stolen state secrets, it all seems to point to a wider plot. Bundle and her friends risk their lives in order to find the murderer before he or she kills again.

A fine old-fashioned English crime story, and very well narrated, too.

Wonderful narrator with great voices.

A very classic english crime story, i enjoyed the narrator's voices and intonations, the story was fun too but i felt it had too many characters to keep track of at some point. Nonetheless the plot was easy to follow and the suspense was kept well until the end

I liked the fact it was a young woman as the "detective".

I have loved Agatha Christie since I was in the third grade. I never read this one until I saw the movie recently. Still loved it even though I knew who the villains were. The narrator did a great job with his characterization and distinguishing between people in the book.

Wonderfully read! One of Christie’s most entertaining and lighthearted books, with wonderfully witty banter, read perfectly.

So glad I selected this freebie! Awesome narration and compelling story, as are all Christy mysteries. I was hanging on til the very end! Loved it!

The first half of the book is pure Christie gold. The second half makes no sense and feels more like Scooby Doo. Still, I continued seeing this n my head remade into a movie, framed around 21st century hipsters with too much money and too much time on their hands. Still, the screenwriter would have to fix the ending.

Kept me jumping. Christie is a wonderful writer. Have to laugh at some of her descriptions. And sometimes just at the cleverness of her style. Here she captures the style of the Jazz age. As to the mystery, the problem to be solved keeps changing and the listener is not sure of the nature of the crime. Christie drops hints throughout the book but they are hidden in the mass of details and the listener soon forgets in the fast pace of the narrative. it isn't till the end when one of the characters recounts the search that all is fit together. and then it's so complicated that I had to listen twice to get it all straight. A delightful read/listen. The narration is expertly done by a man with a vaguely British accent, who captures the nuances and characteristics of each character's voice.
