Summary
The #1 New York Times bestselling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls series.

Look for the hit series “A Discovery of Witches,” now streaming on AMC+, Sundance Now, and Shudder!

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

“A captivating and romantic ripping yarn,”* Shadow of Night confirms Deborah Harkness as a master storyteller, able to cast an “addictive tale of magic, mayhem and two lovers.”*

Great series

I LOVED this book, possibly more than the first. I loved the time travel and historical piece of it, especially since there were real historical figures in the book. I'm always impressed by Jennifer Ikeda's performance because she shifts flawlessly from character to character, accent to accent, and it's never boring. Can't wait to start the final book!

Deborah Harness has the skill to immerse me in the characters' world. Her books are so hard to put down. Read another chapter or go to sleep is not even a question anymore. Just one more chapter wins almost every time.

Good story Makes me want to know more about the history of witches and vampires over the ages

Even better than the first. The addition of a historical element crushed it for me.

Profile Avatar Barbara P. Apr 2023

Great fantasy novel. Definitely loving the whole series

Profile Avatar Shaniece P. Feb 2023

Loved the story and the narration. Looking forward to the next one.

Profile Avatar Charma P. May 2022

Very nice storyline, not too extreme. The devil is in the details and this Author and Narrater complement each other. Gotta Go now. I have to start the next book in the series.

Profile Avatar Donna S. Apr 2022

I love the way the book is written and the intertwining of history and fiction. Jennifer is a fantastic narrator I have listen to some books of hers and I love her nuances and frasing.

Profile Avatar Marquita H Apr 2022

A wonderful narrator to accompany this fabulous book.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2022

Best narrator I have ever heard!! I'm from Denmark, but this book doesn't exist in Danish as an audiobook. The third book can be found in Danish, but after 5 minutes I switched to the English version. Don't know how I can ever listen to another audiobook narrated by anyone but Jennifer Ikeda.

Profile Avatar Heidi E. Sep 2021

Not many books can capture my attention as well as this did and Jennifer Ikeda did a great job.

Profile Avatar Honey K. Aug 2021

I loved this book

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2021

Jennifer Ikeda is terrific!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2020

The narrator did an excellent job yet again, though volume 2 felt a bit too long. It started to drag when they started time travelling, even though it filled many gaps in the story. I'd love to know how the story unfolds in the next one.

Profile Avatar Jasmine W. Aug 2020

Amazing second book definitely a must read and amazing narration flows smoothly between all the complex caricatures.

Profile Avatar Angie P. Jul 2020

It was a good exciting series!

Profile Avatar Sally M. May 2020

The book was great. The narrator is by far the best!

Profile Avatar Laura S. Aug 2019

Wonderful Trilogy and a really great narrator.

Profile Avatar Gina G. Dec 2018

Excellent book!

Profile Avatar Karisa M. Oct 2018

Amazing sequel! I love the story and really love the narrator. I usually prefer male narrators but Jennifer Ikeda is a wonderful exception. Loved Discovery of Witches and this book and am looking forward to the next story in the series.

Profile Avatar Melissa M. Jul 2018

Narrator was amazing. This book is the intermediate book before the last one and it has a lot of storyline and some steamy sex scenes. I loved it it was very nice and good for a long drive or at work

Profile Avatar Diane R. Jul 2018

The first book was better. This book seemed to have a lot of unnecessary “filler.” I’ve started the 3rd book. I hope it moves along better than this one. It’s nice having the same narrator for all 3 books. She does a terrific job.

Profile Avatar Benito C. Jul 2018

I love the story told in all the series and I would love some more!

Profile Avatar Scott F Mar 2018

Loved the first book, the second book was a little dry and long. Not much happening, the main characters just seem to be milling around waiting for something to happen that just never really happens. It sets the stage for the third book. Overall, a recommended read, but I think I could have skipped the middle book and not missed very much.

Profile Avatar Mariah C Jan 2018

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND THIS NARRATOR! I “discovered” A Discovery of Witches while looking for a book to follow up on Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic. Now, I’m through the second book in Harkness’ All Souls trilogy and I’m truly hooked. After listening to the first book for like two hours, I purchased all 3. There are some bits that seem like sexism to me, especially between our main characters, and you do have the classic smart-and-talented-and-closeted-beauty-who-is-not-like-other-girls-falls-in-love-with-a-beautiful-and-emotionally-constipated-vampire thing going on, but I fall for it every time. I would recommend this to other people looking for magic, history, romance, and a great sense of adventure.

Profile Avatar Elba D Jan 2018

The narrator is amazing!! I couldn’t believe that she could do all of those different voices with all of the different accents! This book is very well written and I really love the story line.

Profile Avatar Maria Loomis Dec 2016

The narrator is incredible. This story requires about 50 different accents and she nails them. So much so, when there is a group of characters debating, you know who is speaking before it's proclaimed as a "so and so said." The story in and of itself is certainly that of a "second book". The plot needed to cover a lot of ground and did so, but sometimes at the expense of character development. The relationship of the two main characters is choppy one minute and great the next; the transitions can leave you with whiplash. The overall story has a lovely arch--full of adventure and history. I highly recommend this series and this book is an imperative read in the process.

Profile Avatar Marsha Scanlan Jul 2016

Very riveting story, very broad plot with many conflicting characters

Profile Avatar Sabrina Bullock Dec 2015

Wonderful series of books. I have loved the first 2...cant wait for the last one. The narrator is excellent.

Profile Avatar Theresa Burlew Nov 2015

Absolutely splendid series. I'm listening to all 3 books back to back and am having a wonderful time. The narrator is excellent and the storyline addictive. I'll be a bit sad when I finish The Book of Life.

Profile Avatar Beatriz Salinas Sep 2015

I loved the book, wish it wasn't as descriptive since I felt it would jeer away from the story line, but overall great book! Can't wait to read the last one!

Profile Avatar cristina guerra Sep 2015

The story is good if the vampire was not so possessive it makes everything so annoying book one was good this one not so much I'm more interested in magic than romance so this book was not for me

Profile Avatar john arial Jun 2015

Profile Avatar craig specht Jun 2014

Profile Avatar teresa desiderati Feb 2014

Profile Avatar gayl loose Oct 2013

Epic, enthralling adventure. Cant wait for the last book. The narrater's command of foreign language is absolutely brilliant.

Profile Avatar Julie Trish Sep 2013

I have enjoyed this series very much and can't wait for the next book. What I most liked about this book, is that it was smart, references to history, alchemy and well written thank to the author.
