When fifteen-year-old Jack Sligo runs away from his loving Boston-Irish family, he hopes to get a summer job on a cruise ship. His dream becomes a nightmare when two strangers give him mysterious drinks in a waterfront saloon.
Jack wakes up, far at sea, shanghaied aboard an African freighter. The ship’s first call is a remote jungle port in Venezuela where there’s plenty of thieves, rum and women, but no opportunity for escape.
Manor Nelson, the ship’s bo’sun, is his secret protector. A silent bond grows between them as they fight the inhumanity of the ship’s master and Jack learns the cruelty of segregation.
But Jack needs more than friends to survive a vicious life at sea. He plans to escape with the help of seventeen-year-old Winston, a Jamaican, on the ship since he was twelve. He befriends men like stone silent Ebanks, whose black ancestors disgraced themselves as slave traders; Smitty, the dangerous mulatto seaman who is his boss; and “Chips,” the ship’s carpenter from Cayman Brac who knows all about God. Even a curious shipwreck in a jungle fails to sway Jack from his goal to find a way to get home.
“Though this is the author’s first book, it is his first-hand experience, having been shanghaied aboard an African freighter, that makes the book come to life. Fans of other sea-set teen novels like Avi’s The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle will like this book, which captures well the story of an utterly inexperienced kid being thrust into a situation he isn’t quite ready for, as well as the adventure he has in exploring new countries and learning to survive on the open sea.” Molly Horan, ForeWord Reviews, Young Adult Fiction
“David Collins' novel narrates his remarkable real-life story of running away from home at 15 and being 'shanghaied' aboard an African freighter. The book is rich with adventure, longing, and twists that will keep the reader turning the page.” Margot Lee Shetterly, Author, Hidden Figures

Initial thought upon finishing the book This book never cease to be amazing. I really loved this story and all the gorgeous characters in it. It was so thrilling to be back in this world to see how Jack Sligo face everything that is thrown at him in life. I never want this book to end. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect in this. I found large parts of Shanghaied to be interesting and flushed with adventures. What about the audiobook? I listened to this, as always, via audiobook and I truly think this is the way to go. I often become disenchanted with books that are long because they take me so long to read – but audiobooks never phase me, even if they are nearly 100hours long. You just plod along very easily and enjoy the amazing performance of Andrew Tell who narrates this. Summary I don’t need to warble on any longer on this book. It’s great, guys. The story is different but it’s worth it and totally different piece of adventure. The ending to the book brings a WONDERFUL plot twist that I couldn’t be happier. I love these characters, I would read a book like this for lifetime Collin’s writing is simply spell-binding. Big thumbs up from me. One reason to listen: Andrew Tell's incredible narration. Highly Recommended!

Hypnotic, rattling.... Time collapses as, minute by minute, David Paul Collins rivetingly and movingly chronicles what ensued, much of which is near agony to read.... A brilliantly told story that won't go begging when the year's literary honors are doled out

The author narrates a heart-warming tale with full of adventure. I felt connected to the characters and the story. Not only were the characters on the point, but the author's writing skills also keep you engrossed with actions and adventure. The book is a true account of author's experience and that makes it more interesting to listen. Yes, i read it as an audio book and it was a great experience . It has given me an additional insight and appreciation of the work from the start. Completely captivated by the story, the author made me feel i was there with Jack feeling his pain and joy. The writing style is detailed but the author sets the hook fast. His innate sense of the story and the dialogue paint a vivid picture of a sailor's life. @davidpaulcollinsbooks tells a true story and compelling tale that makes a wonderful read.
