Summary
Squire Tehawennihárhos Davis, called Sky Walker, rides through the turbulent and lawless days of 1845, Canada West. He decides he wants the love of the Scotchwoman Jennet Ferguson of Uxbridge but he does not easily win his prize. He puts himself at the heart of the great divide between Indigenous traditions and the code of the new Christian society taking over the province and realizes a hard truth: neither the establishment of the Six Nations Confederacy nor the Presbyterian elite will accept him and Jennet as a couple. Tehawennihárhos becomes involved in a manhunt for a Mohawk cousin and a violent English accomplice, who are wanted for the assault of a woman who runs a tavern on Vinegar Hill in Brantford. The chase takes the four horsemen upstream and downstream on the Grand River as they clash with land jobbers, robber barons and disgruntled British regulars. Plots and subplots breathe life into our history and the various characters’ stories animate this riveting adventure about the early days of Canada.
