Summary
Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.

Connecticut, 1666: An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector. The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil. To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help.

Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan – one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.

A slave girl and her disabled, autistic husband have it tough in a deeply misogynistic cult. They are also bullied by Disney's Gaston. One day husband draws slave girl like one of his French girls, and this kicks off his end. You're constantly wondering if this is 1660s Scream because you're like, "Bro do not go in there, what is wrong with you?" Spoiler: he goes in. Then some mythical creatures who feel like they were created by Sid from Toy Story appear. Fish with baby head swims in the sky. Okay then. One is confused and/or has amnesia. His constant monologue is not interesting. Slave girl and amnesia creature become friends, and there is a lot of interesting potential for the book here! You're excited to meet more creatures and get into some fun magic and forest frolicking! One slight acid trip has this forest frolicking happening, and you're like finally, this book is gonna get good! But then very quickly the book hits a complete wall about 55% in. Now it is just a complete boring slog of town cult trials, torture, and more Gaston bullying. All of Sid's toys are MIA. You're bored and want more magic. This portion of the story goes on far too long and also feels off how much female torture this author wants to get into. Random side characters (more bullies) are suddenly given priority and they suck. Author picked the wrong focus here, IMO. Could have kept with the evil interpretations, but taken it to the forest and focused on the only interesting part of this book: the magic. At about 85% in it picks up again finally and now you're just like is this book over yet? Is the end going to be so good that this last 25%+ slog is worth it? Spoiler: it wasn't. Some moments of interesting non-duality never turn into actual magic beyond what we already know (little), and in the end you're (purposefully) left to wonder if Abitha actually did turn evil, and then question your interpretation of evil. The witch trials ruined what could have been an interesting read. Overall I liked the dark tone, but my first Brom book will likely be my last.

It was bad do yourself a favor and don’t read. I feel like the ONLY THEME it had was that we should all allow ourselves to love our own gods because (at least in the story) they’re all real, but they COMPLETELY throw that away i. the end. Very upsetting read. Spend 10 pages on how to make a broom fly.
