For those familiar with Sherlock Holmes, this story is in some way closure to a life well spent. The story weaves Holmes past and present with three different tales working through Holmes offten times declining capacities to remember, detect, and rationalize. Though failing, Holmes remains a dignified character throughout. Moreover, Holmes reveals a few "human" qualities of compassion and fallibility rarely displayed in the young Holmes "in the chase" of his early tales.
