Of those people, nine thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight have come to shop. The other twelve have come to kill.Ray Cruz, one of the heroes of Hunter’s last bestseller, Dead Zero, is in the mall with his fiancée and her family. The retired Marine sniper thought he was done with stalking and killing—but among the trapped thousands, he’s the only one with a plan and the guts to confront the self-proclaimed “Brigade Mumbai.” Now all he needs is a gun.FBI Sniper Dave McElroy has a gun. But positioned on the roof of the vast building and without explosives or fuses—or the go-ahead from his superiors—he is cut off from his targets and forced into the role of witness to the horror unfolding below.Having learned the lessons of Columbine, the feds believe that immediate action is the only solution. But Douglas Obobo, the charismatic and ambitious commandant of the state police, orders cooperation, tolerance, communication, and empathy for the gunmen. He feels that with his superior negotiating skills, he can make contact with the shooters and gently nudge them into surrender. But what if their goal all along has been unparalleled massacre—and they’re only waiting for prime time?

I enjoy Hunter's books and I enjoyed this one too just not as much. It was a bit thin on plot and on character development. The narrator tried to bring more depth to the characters but ended up being a distraction for me. This one is an afternoon on the beach read and not one to remember.

The story was somewhat engaging and because of mall events that have included active shooters, this could have been an extremely interesting book. The author’s use of language was often stilted or overly formal. For this type of story, dialogue and the descriptive text should reflect the language of the type of characters in the story. Otherwise, this was a pretty good book and I really wanted to know the ending- a measure of how well an author has done. The narrator, on the other hand, was not good. His narration did nothing to enhance the telling of the tale. He made me think that this book would be better read by a physical book or ebook.

I wondered what this story was all about and then came the idea of a game simulation in real life. I only read the abridged version so I feel a lot of the details and character development were missing. However, not bad for a freebie.
